EOA to host masterclass in supporting employee ownership transition

The EOA is hosting a masterclass for accountants and advisors to support their clients to explore and transition to employee ownership.

The one-day event in Birmingham includes three technical seminars, two keynote speakers on employee ownership, plus the opportunities to network with 700 delegates who are exploring employee ownership, or have recently transitioned to EO, or are established employee owned businesses, who will be attending the second day of the EOA Conference.

The technical sessions are being run by Employee Share Scheme and Employee Ownership Advisers RM2, audit, tax and consulting services provider RSM and employee owned law firm that focusses on employee share schemes and share option schemes, Postlethwaite.

While keynote speakers are Chris McDermott MD of Corby based Cambridge Weight Plan and Alastair Sawday, founder of Sawday’s and Sawday’s Canopy and Stars.

The masterclass is being delivered after a year-long inquiry to evidence the effect of employee ownership as an economic and social enabler – the Ownership Effect Inquiry – which saw a panel of independent UK business leaders hear evidence from more than 100 employee owned businesses and advisors concluding that “that there was a significant benefit to having more employee ownership in the UK – for the individual, businesses and the regional economies”.

The panel recommended that the UK should build on the success of projects in Scotland and Wales that support succession with employee ownership as an option and identified that supporting awareness and knowledge levels of employee ownership with accountants and other advisors was a key barrier to overcome to support the growth of employee ownership.

Deb Oxley, CEO of the EOA, said: “Employee ownership is the fastest growing succession solution for SMEs and family businesses in the UK, providing an effective governance approach for future succession and growth. With 60% increase in the employee owned sector happening since the introduction of the Employee Ownership Trust tax incentives in 2013, this trend is expected to continue.

“With 120,000 family businesses and thousands of SMEs needing succession solutions in the next 10 years it is really important that we have enough accountants and advisors that know how to support their clients to explore employee ownership as an option and to be able to support a transition.”

The event will take place from 8.00-15.30 on Tuesday 20 November at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole (NEC). For more information visit our Masterclass web page
