This webinar will share the importance of why any business, regardless of size or shape, needs a good and robust governance structure.
Good Governance embeds positive behaviours: creates internal checks and balances, helps businesses plan and deliver in the longer term, and improves control over management and information systems. It also demonstrates to investors, suppliers, customers and wider stakeholders the sincerity of a business.
Jonathan Geldart, Director General, Institute of Directors
Jonathan was appointed Director General of the Institute of Directors in October 2019. Prior to this he spent 30 years working in the professional services sector, most recently at Grant Thornton International Ltd responsible for the organisation’s interest in China and previously as a global board member responsible for the brand. Jonathan has a long-standing connection with the IoD, as Chair of IoD Yorkshire and North East region prior to his appointment as Director General.
He is the author of three books on China, and in addition to being a Fellow of the IoD he is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He studied Geography and Archaeology at St. Andrews University specialising in underwater archaeology. Outside of work, his interests include hill walking and fell running.
Baroness Bowles of Berkhamstead – Member of the APPG Corporate Governance
Sharon Bowles – Baroness Bowles of Berkhamsted – has been a Liberal Democrat peer since 2015 and her main areas of policy intervention are financial services, competition, audit and corporate governance.
She was a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014 and chaired its Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, becoming internationally listed as one of the most influential people in financial services regulation.
Sharon has an academic background in science and mathematics, professional qualification as a European Patent Attorney and ran her own business for over 20 years. She is a non-Executive Director of the London Stock Exchange Plc, a member of the international Systemic Risk Council and is also engaged with development of community banks and social impact investing.

Barry is the CEO & co-founder of‘employee owned Paradigm Norton Financial Planning and has subsequently led the team of 85 to its current position whereby the firm is widely regarded as one of the most respected financial planning firms in the UK – an achievement recognised within the profession through Paradigm Norton winning over 27 professional awards since its formation in 2001. In 2019 the firm became a ‘B Corp’ as it seeks to balance purpose with profit.
Barry is a regular contributor to the broadsheets and financial trade press. He is a past Chair of the Denver based Financial Planning Standards Board, a past President of the Institute of Financial Planning and in 2020 was voted one of the top 100 ‘Industry’s most influential’ by International Adviser.
